Āl ʿImrān

Āl ʿImrān The Family of Imran آل عمران Medinan (surah 3 • 200 ayahs) The surah that mentions that God has chosen The Family of Imran to inherit prophethood above the people of all the world (Imran was a common ancestor of Moses and Jesus). It takes its name from the expression “the House of ʿImrān” (āl-i ʿImrān) mentioned in verse 33. It begins by emphasizing that the Quran confirms the earlier scriptures and goes on to say later that the central tenet of faith is devotion to God (verse 19 ff.). The story of Zachariah, Mary, and Jesus is given in verse 35 ff. and the fact that Jesus was unfathered, just as Adam was created without a father, is accentuated. Aspects of the battles of Badr (year 2/624) and Uḥud (year 3/625) are described, especially the latter, where most of the early Muslims disobeyed the Prophet Muḥammad and were defeated. The surah first introduce the tension that arose between the Muslims and certain of the Jews and Christians (verse 65 ff. and verse 98 ff.), then closes by emphasizing the unity of faith and conduct between the Muslims and some of these People of the Book, explaining that these will have their reward from God (verse 199). Transliteration: allāhu lā ʾilāha ʾillā huwa l-ḥayyu l-qayyūmu Translation: Allah—there is no god except Him— is the Living One, the All-sustainer. 3 القرآن: نَزَّلَ عَلَيْكَ الْكِتَابَ بِالْحَقِّ مُصَدِّقًا لِمَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ وَأَنْزَلَ التَّوْرَاةَ وَالْإِنْجِيلَ Transliteration: nazzala ʿalayka l-kitāba bi-l-ḥaqqi muṣaddiqan li-mā bayna yadayhi wa-ʾanzala t-tawrāta wa-l-ʾinjīla Translation: He has sent down to you the Book with the truth confirming what was [revealed] before it, and He had sent down the Torah and the Evangel 4 القرآن: مِنْ قَبْلُ هُدًى لِلنَّاسِ وَأَنْزَلَ الْفُرْقَانَ ۗ إِنَّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا بِآيَاتِ اللَّهِ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ شَدِيدٌ ۗ وَاللَّهُ عَزِيزٌ ذُو انْتِقَامٍ Transliteration: min qablu hudan li-n-nāsi wa-ʾanzala l-furqāna ʾinna lladhīna kafarū bi-ʾāyāti llāhi lahum ʿadhābun shadīdun wa-llāhu ʿazīzun dhū ntiqāmin Translation: before as guidance for mankind, and He has sent down the Criterion.1 Indeed those who defy the signs of Allah, there is a severe punishment for them; and Allah is all-mighty, avenger. 5 القرآن: إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَخْفَىٰ عَلَيْهِ شَيْءٌ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا فِي السَّمَاءِ Transliteration: ʾinna llāha lā yakhfā ʿalayhi shayʾun fī l-ʾarḍi wa-lā fī s-samāʾi Translation: Nothing is indeed hidden from Allah in the earth or in the sky.
